Some lies we tell others – but we save the most convincing ones for ourselves. Our new double bill, Lies Men Tell, brings together two choreographies and two very different takes on lying.
In Ondřej Vinklát’s choreography To Oneself, we turn to the lies we tell ourselves. In Štěpán Pechar’s Lies Men Tell, we land on a film set where one difficult-to-explain truth sets off a domino effect of increasingly absurd lies.
In To Oneself, Ondřej Vinklát turns the spotlight on our ego – that noisy roommate who always knows best, has to have the last word and is definitely never to blame. Six dancers, smoke, lighting and music ranging from Bach to Ivy Lab set an ego trip in motion – one where losing control comes all too easily…
And then – cut.
The stage becomes a film set in the middle of a shoot that is falling apart before our eyes. In Lies Men Tell, Štěpán Pechar sets off a chain reaction: one uncomfortable truth, one questionable alibi and increasingly inventive lies. The pace picks up, kisses give way to slaps, and even off camera, everyone is playing a role.
The audience has the best possible seat – safely in the auditorium as someone else’s disaster turns into an increasingly absurd spectacle. At least until they recognise something of themselves in it.
This time, the dancers’ bodies won’t be the only ones doing the talking: Anna Prášilová Fialová, Jana Čermáková Kotrbatá, Jiří Lábus, Jakub Žáček, Filip Kaňkovský and Radúz Mácha lend their voices to the characters.
